String Quartet of the Athens State Orchestra at the Maria Callas Museum
The Maria Callas Museum is delighted to collaborate for a second year with the Athens State Orchestra, hosting a unique concert by its distinguished musicians, titled “Eastern Roots.”
The concert takes us on a journey from the 19th to the 20th century through Eastern Europe. Featuring works by Borodin, Shostakovich, and Kurtág, the program highlights the contrasts between romanticism and modernism, while also revealing the bridges that unite the different musical languages of the era.
A passage from the 19th to the 20th century in Eastern Europe, through the works of Borodin, Shostakovich, and Kurtág. Borodin was one of the leading figures of Russian romanticism, and his Second Quartet is one of his most beloved works—a brilliant example of this movement. From the repertoire of the much more widely known Shostakovich, one of the most popular composers of the 20th century, we will hear two rarely performed pieces—Elegy and Polka for string quartet—as well as his brief Seventh Quartet. György Kurtág is a figure whose presence in Central European musical life has spanned more than eighty years and exceeds even his compositional output. His Twelve Microludes, a work dedicated to his close friend, Hungarian cellist and composer Mihály András, will also be performed.
