Maria Callas Museum of the City of Athens: festive activities and free entrance for the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great diva

The Maria Callas Museum of the Municipality of Athens is celebrating the 100th anniversary since the birth of the great opera diva on Saturday, December 2, with free admission and a rich program of festive events. A reservation through more.com is necessary.

The 100th anniversary since the birth of Maria Callas is an event that has been included in the UNESCO list of anniversaries for 2023 and the residents and visitors of Athens will have the opportunity to celebrate it through free activities offered by the Maria Callas Museum throughout the day.

The Maria Callas Museum of the Municipality of Athens will be open to visitors from 10 am to 12 midnight with free admission and pre-booking required via more.com. It also offers a rich program with educational activities for families with children aged 5-12 years old, guided tours in English and thematic tours by members of its scientific team.

The activities will lead up to a 50’s-60’s celebration street event on Petraki Street (behind the Maria Callas Museum). Kosmos 93,6 and the “Kosmopolitans” of the morning band Leonidas Antonopoulos and Yannis Dimitriadis choose the music and create a unique atmosphere that will revive the sound and the hits of the era when Maria Callas was at her peak and sealed with her voice and presence: the years of the ’50s and ’60s. Those who will attend will witness a different DJ set with many surprises and unexpected guests. At the same time, cocktails inspired by her favorite drink will be served at the Maria Callas Museum.

Educational program for families with children aged 5-12 years old

How many different costumes can there be of the great opera soprano in the museum’s collection? Where could her favorite mirror be hidden? What do you mean there are decks of cards featuring Maria Callas? Inspired by the museum’s exhibits, we discover the life and art of the opera diva by exploring her objects and transform ourselves into artists in order to create our own exhibition about Maria Callas.

 

12.00 & 18.00 – Guided tour in English (EN)

Maria Callas Museum’s expert staff will give a free guided tour in English for visitors who want to learn more about Maria Callas’ career and life.

 

Point of View: thematic tours (GR)

13.00 Despina Andriopoulou, Museum Manager. Through a tour of the exhibition, emphasis will be placed on the collection and interpretations of objects related to the performing arts.

15.00 Andromachi Gazi, Professor, Panteion University, museologist/member of the Maria Callas Museum project team. Andromachi Gazi will explain the rationale, objectives and main axes of the museological study for the MCΜ as well as the challenges of managing a myth in the environment of a modern museum.

17.00 Erato Koutsoudaki-Gerolympou, Architect Museologist/Member of the project team of the Maria Callas Museum. The designer of the permanent exhibition of the MCΜ will guide visitors through the prism of her own relationship with the diva, built over 10 years of involvement with the work, revealing little secrets of the exhibition and discussing the sources of her inspiration.

19.00 Alexandros Harkiolakis, musicologist/director of the Friends of Music Association/member of the Maria Callas Museum project team. The tour will focus on Maria Callas’ performance abilities which, in combination with her melodramatic skills, changed the world of opera forever.

18.30 – 24.00 50’s-60’s Celebration Street Event
