The Maria Callas Museum of the City of Athens brings the world of music to the children of “Agia Sofia” Children’s Hospital

The Maria Callas Museum of the City of Athens brings the world of music to the children of “Agia Sofia” Children’s Hospital

With a strong commitment to its educational and social mission, the Maria Callas Museum of the City of Athens extends its activities beyond its walls and into “Agia Sofia” Children’s Hospital, presenting the program The Power of My Voice – A Musical Journey with the Maria Callas Museum.”

This original music-education program is specially designed for children hospitalized or staying at the hospital. Its purpose is to nurture creativity, self-expression, communication, and discovery of self and others. Through activities such as musical improvisation, theatrical play, and visual arts, each child has the opportunity to express themselves, create their own musical piece, and receive a recording of it to keep.

A particularly meaningful element of the program is the presentation of authentic objects from the Museum’s collection—photographs, musical scores, and accessories once belonging to Maria Callas—brought directly into the hospital. In this way, children experience first-hand encounters with Maria Callas’ cultural heritage, making the story of the performing arts accessible, tangible, and inspiring.

The initiative has been designed and is delivered by the experienced team of the Maria Callas Museum in collaboration with composer and educational program creator Markella Skourti. The Board of Directors of “Agia Sofia” Children’s Hospital and Ms. Efrosyni Vlachioti, Head of Nursing Services, warmly embraced the proposal, actively supporting its implementation in the spirit of meaningful collaboration.

Two workshops have already taken place with an overwhelmingly positive response, demonstrating the vital role of the arts in strengthening resilience and fostering creativity.

This program forms part of the Museum’s outreach initiatives, reflecting its ongoing commitment to share its cultural identity in innovative ways and to offer meaningful contributions to communities that need them most.
