Introduction
Masterclasses dedicated to the art of opera
Each year, the Maria Callas Museum presents a series of masterclasses led by distinguished artists and professionals with established careers in the operatic field. These experts, each a leader in their discipline, offer participants valuable insight and hands-on training in various aspects of opera.
While Greece boasts a rich tradition in theatre and the performing arts, opera remains a relatively underexplored territory. Recognizing the need to foster deeper education and artistic growth in this domain, the Maria Callas Museum launches its inaugural masterclass cycle—an initiative designed to become a hub for artistic exchange, professional development, creative exploration, and mentorship.
Inspired by Maria Callas’ legendary series of masterclasses at the Juilliard School in New York (1971–1972) and the dedicated gallery space in the museum’s permanent exhibition, the Museum’s masterclasses will highlight the transformative impact of Callas—not only as a soprano but as a powerful stage presence, interpreter, and actress.
The program seeks to illuminate opera’s essential connection to the broader world of performance, particularly its interplay with theatre. Through practical sessions and real-world case studies, each masterclass will explore how opera brings together music, drama, and stagecraft. At the same time, participants will gain insight into the content, function, and essential tools of each professional role within an opera production—valuable knowledge for emerging professionals or final-year students aiming to pursue or continue a career in opera.
