Featuring works by Borodin, Shostakovich, and Kurt\u00e1g, the program highlights the contrasts between romanticism and modernism, while also revealing the bridges that unite the different musical languages of the era.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">A passage from the 19th to the 20th century in Eastern Europe, through the works of Borodin, Shostakovich, and Kurt\u00e1g. Borodin was one of the leading figures of Russian romanticism, and his Second Quartet is one of his most beloved works\u2014a brilliant example of this movement. From the repertoire of the much more widely known Shostakovich, one of the most popular composers of the 20th century, we will hear two rarely performed pieces\u2014<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Elegy<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Polka<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> for string quartet\u2014as well as his brief <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Seventh Quartet<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">. Gy\u00f6rgy Kurt\u00e1g is a figure whose presence in Central European musical life has spanned more than eighty years and exceeds even his compositional output.
